Sammish Island, WA

Living on an island in the Pacific Northwest provides me access to nature and in particular the variety of plants, animals and birds that live close to and are dependent on the waters of Puget Sound. This landscape is very different from the Ponderosa Pine forests and Shrub Steppe sage lands of eastern Washington where I grew up. In both regions there is a struggle to preserve landscape either for economic development, abundant farmland or romantic pristine natural environment. These vying perceptions create tensions about how land could or should be used. Observing these landscapes change over time has allowed me to witness connections between human behavior and the environment in which we live and has provided ideas for me to contemplate in my work.
